Building a better future
Health and financial well-being have no borders. That’s why we’re committed through our work and partnerships to addressing issues that have a global impact.
Our employees are driving innovation in climate resiliency, breaking barriers for underrepresented people in our industry, and partnering with the United Nations Global Compact. As we strive to protect the health and financial well-being of people everywhere, we remain committed to our mission.
Three Pillars: Our commitment for creating social impact
A spirit of social responsibility has permeated Milliman’s DNA since its founding in 1947. Three pillars represent our commitment:
Our Work – In our client work, we live our mission at its core through projects to design crop insurance that protects Ethiopian farmers from loss of income, closing the inequality gap for women in retirement planning, and developing better coverage for flood insurance.
Our People – We nurture and celebrate employees through activities that promote diversity and inclusion. We’re committed to increasing underrepresented people in our industry through scholarship programs and sponsorships of the International Association of Black Actuaries and the Organization of Latino Actuaries. Education and mentoring programs, including Milliman University and the Milliman Mentorship Program, help employees grow in their careers. We’ve also implemented Employee Resource Groups to identify, support, and increase diversity within our organization.
Our World – We contribute to our communities through volunteer activities with the Milliman Giving Fund, provide funding for global relief efforts such as our Global Coronavirus Support 2020, and address climate change through the Milliman Climate Resilience Initiative.

Transforming communities
United Nations Global Compact
In 2019, Milliman amplified its commitment to social responsibility. We signed on to the United Nations Global Compact, committing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. The UNSDGs are a natural extension of Milliman’s mission to protect the health and financial well-being of people everywhere.
Milliman Giving Fund
While many staff donate and volunteer locally, our firmwide charitable giving is directed by our employee and retiree-funded Milliman Giving Fund. The Milliman Giving Fund amplifies our mission by funding transformative programs to improve the health, education, and economic development of communities worldwide. We have granted more than $3 million to fund signature projects with partners in these focus areas. At this time, the Milliman Giving Fund only accepts proposals by request.
Opportunity International – Opportunity Zone
The Milliman Giving fund partners with Opportunity International to fuel the economic transformation of thousands of parents and children living in poverty in Uganda and Colombia. From 2019-2021, we granted $750,000 to fund an Opportunity Zone program in Mityana, Uganda. The program combines two high-impact education and rural finance programs to create a zone where more jobs, higher incomes for parents, and quality education for children accelerate the pace in which families and communities can build a better future. Based on its success, we have granted up to $900,000 from 2022-2024 to build on the progress of the Mityana zone and start a new zone in Cartagena, Colombia.
The Actuarial Foundation – Math Motivators
Milliman partners with The Actuarial Foundation to support Math Motivators—a free tutoring program that pairs lower-income students with volunteer math tutors.
Since 2018, the Milliman Giving Fund has been a significant funder of the program’s expansion that helped reach more than 1,000 students per year in 22 states. Our continuing support enables further program expansion, including virtual tutoring, drop-in centers, expanded grade levels, test prep, tutoring in multiple languages, and their Money Mentors financial literacy program.
Milliman employees and retirees also volunteer as tutors in many cities.
Partners in Health – Navajo Nation
Our 2021-2023 grant helps Partners in Health support the Navajo Nation to address significant health disparities in one of America’s largest indigenous communities. The program works with a native-run nonprofit to strengthen the health system and improve the lives of those living with chronic diseases.
Splash – Project WISE
Our 2021-2023 grant makes us the lead corporate partner in a multi-year effort by Splash to bring clean drinking water, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene education to every public school in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia through Project WISE.
