Milliman is a market leader in providing a wide range of independent expert services across the UK life industry and abroad. We work both as the independent expert as defined by regulations, and as an expert in life assurance and actuarial issues.
We have advised on a large number of demutualisations, transfers of business, and restructuring projects. Our consultants offer unbiased, clear, and concise guidance on scheme structures, policyholder compensation methods, support mechanisms, and attribution methodologies.
To ensure a smooth acceptance process, we work closely with the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the senior management of both the transferring and receiving companies, and legal and technical advisers. Our wide experience means we can often identify early on what may or may not be acceptable to regulators.
Our independent expert services include:
- Board support – We have considerable experience assisting boards of directors in understanding a variety of complex issues. In particular, we have a longstanding relationship with the FSA and detailed knowledge of its expectations for a wide range of requirements.
- Peer review – Our assignments have included providing an independent opinion as an expert where regulations require it, as well as peer reviews done simply at the client's request.
- Monitoring actuary – When demutualisation gives rise to a supervisory committee, we act for clients as a monitoring actuary, working to ensure that appropriate schemes continue to operate correctly and that policyholders are treated fairly.
- Expert witness and arbitration – We are frequently called upon to serve as expert witnesses during litigation of all types and offer support when clients are engaged in arbitration proceedings.
